Obituary for Joan Helen Volpenhein
Joan Volpenhein, 87, of Southgate, Kentucky passed away Friday, November 30, 2018, at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, surrounded by her family. Joan was the first female police officer for the City of Newport and Campbell County in the 1970’s, and was touted as an expert marksman. She broke new ground in this profession, all the while raising four children. Joan was a lifelong member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #10. She enjoyed her pets, feeding the birds, taking rides, watchin the Reds and Bengals, and spending time with her family. She courageously battled Alzheimer’s for 9 years with the last two years at Carmel Manor Nursing Home. Always a police officer at heart, she could often be found “patrolling” the halls to ensure residents were safe. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Carmel Manor for their loving care of Miss Joanie while she was there. Joan is survived by her brother, George Decker, Indianapolis, daughters Melanie Chalk and Lisa (Doug) Steffen of Southgate, Kentucky, 10 grandchildren, Shelly, Amy, Bryan, Adam, Brad, Amanda, Cory, Erica, Anna and Sara, 7 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Joan was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Feldkamp and daughter, Stephanie (Stevie) Smith. A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 10am at St. Therese Church, Southgate, KY. No visitation. Memorials can be made to Carmel Manor Nursing Home, 100 Carmel Manor Drive, Ft. Thomas, KY 41075 or St. Therese Church, 11 Temple Place, Southgate, KY 41071.
